wet, active and unsettled

A weather blog for the local area states the week’s weather will be spring-like and wet, active and unsettled.

I took a long and quiet run on the first day of spring...in a snow storm. I did see four bikers on the trails that day.

Turkeys trying to build their harem. The hens completely ignored them and continued to eat the whole time I watched. They need to work on their game and grown their beards to more impressive lengths.

Turkeys and deer. The buck that had the weird shed is on the right. The shed is gone and the snow is melting- finally!

The streams make noise now that the ice melted.

The floor of the woods

The floor of the woods

It's nice to be able to forget to take off your sunglasses and toss them to the side of the trail and not worry they'll be buried by snow.... or taken when you forget to pick them back up off the trail for a few days in a row.

It’s nice to be able to forget to take off your sunglasses and toss them to the side of the trail and not worry they’ll be buried by snow…. or taken when you forget to pick them back up from the trail for a few days in a row. Lookey here, they’re just where I left them.

It's warm enough for the bugs to rejoin us. I'm amazed that I can spend months accidentally inhaling bugs and spiders in the woods and completely forget about those accidental meals during the winter season. The three black dots on my lips are tiny bugs. They're way too small to have a flavor.

I barely made it out of the woods by sunset because I was distracted by animals. I saw a raccoon wading in the stream and a skunk on the bank of the stream. They both went into a hollow under a tree's root system and I was hoping to catch a picture of them together in their hide out. I couldn't see them when I got closer and I didn't get sprayed by the skunk or my face eaten off by the raccoon. Disappointedly uneventful.

And it’s dry enough to bike…for now!

  1. Melissa, this, to me, is probably the best post that I have ever seen you write. Such great photos to complement you poignant narrative. You’re still one of my favorite bloggers. :-)

      Howdy Bob,
Nice to see you posting again!

  2. I’ve heard 70 and rain on Wednesday from one source, 30 and snow from another. I want spring!

      I completely agree! Our lack of spring is getting ridiculous. I was trying to make heads or tails of the week’s weather and the more I’m reading the more confused I’m getting. (;

  3. Great post. Full of texture. Full of life. Love the title. Thanks.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I wrote the blog, couldn’t think of a decent title, went to catch up on the weather and stumbled across a great title.

Tim I’m a bit jealous. It’s been cold enough in the mornings to bike while the ground is firm with frost, but it looks like we’re headed for a week of rain. It’s been an excruciatingly slow start to the season!

  5. Mmm, bugs. Nothing enhances a jaunt through the woods like a mouth full of exoskeleton, does it?

    April 7, 2013 at 10:13 am

    • melissakoski

I’m grateful there is more exoskeleton than juicy organs in these little ones! Every one loves a good crunch right?

“They” say that there’s a lot of protein in bugs; however, I think I will stick to eggs, cheese, and some occasional meat. Who is this “they” that is mentioned quite frequently anyway?

          April 8, 2013 at 10:54 am

          • You know, “them.” The ones that probably do the studies but never injest the actual bugs themselves.

You are giving me the creeps, man! Do I need to find my tinfoil hat? Oh no, I hear a black coptor coming as we speak!

Oh Tony it seems you’ve passed the rain onto us. My basement is sure to flood this week…. motivation to pick up the floor I guess. (:

      • Melissa my apologies! I tried to skip you and send it straight to my kid sis in England, but my powers are limited! Man the pumps!

It’s in the mid-seventies and sunny. I am getting ready for a walk on an arthritic hip. Probably will not last long but gotta get outside! Hey, check out my new gravatar and meet Mike. He loves to rub my beard – too weird!

Louis I think I’m going to start traveling between your house and Rev. Paul’s abode. I’m so tired of being cold!

C’mon down! We have plenty of room but I must warn you about our summers. Often we have a week of nice spring weather then – BAM – it’s over 90 degrees day after day after day. Belize is even hotter being in the tropics. Where Paul lives is @ approximately latitude 17 which is about the same latitude as the middle of the Great Sahara Desert. My place is 37.244354 latitude and the southern tip of Lake Michigan is @ 41.63392 latitude.

Now a very nice place is at my mountain cabin in WV. It does get hot there sometimes but it is rare to reach 90 degrees. It is also closer to you. Assuming that you still live in the Grand Rapids area, it is 600 miles to my cabin and about 800 miles to my house. .

Spring finally popped here in PA. It took a while but is completely worth the wait!

I can’t wait! Now what sort of fun is going on in your gravatar is what I want to know. I feel like I need that contraption without knowing anything about it. (:

  9. You crack me up! Bugs. On your lips. Bwwwaaahhhaaahhaaahhaa. Too funny. (Good source of protein, though, if you eat enough of ’em). :-)

As sunset neared those little bugs seemed to multiply by the thousands. I felts them in my throat and teeth and got such a kick when I peered into the review and saw them on my face too. Hope you’re well Lisa!

  10. Great photos (as always). Love the photo of turkeys and deer — sounds like it would make a great meal! :)

    April 7, 2013 at 10:40 pm

    • melissakoski

Thank you so much. I was just thinking about you this evening. Are you biking in winter gear still? I think the deer and turkey would have made a much better meal than the tiny gnats!

      April 7, 2013 at 11:01 pm

      • I haven’t needed the heavy winter gear in a couple of weeks — but I haven’t put that gear up for the season either — we are supposed to be back in the 20’s by the end of this week. It also looks like I’ll be using my rain gear a lot this week!

        April 7, 2013 at 11:09 pm

        • melissakoski

I’ve been trying to be thankful that I’ve only needed ONE pair of pants and ONE jacket lately. I don’t have a lot of rain gear though so this may be a lame week for me in the outdoor department!

“wet, active and unsettled” – sounds like taken from a poem by Ezra Pound (“petals on a wet, black bough”) – beautiful!

I prefer the poetry of OGDEN Nash while I’m listening to Crosby, Stills, and a Young OGDEN Nash. Sheesh, can it get much worse? My thinking is often done in “stream of conciousness” mode so it sounds real uppity and academic but is about as meaningful as:

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
        All mimsy were the borogoves,
        And the mome raths outgrabe.

Being out of the WordPress loop for a couple months, I apparently forgot how much I enjoy your photos and comical take on life. The noisy stream and the trees shadowed by the sunset? Beautiful.
