No idea – but it sure looks terrifying. I bet no bird or other predator dares touching it because of those black and yellow stripes.

I couldn’t find a match in my Beetles Field Guide (from Peterson), but that doesn’t mean it’s not in there. It might be a stink bug rather than a beetle. You could post it on Bugguide.net and have an answer in a couple hours (or less).
